the Kansas-Nebraska Act

This legislation admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a non-slave state at the same time, so as not to upset the balance between slave and free states in the nation. With the purchase of the Louisiana Territory and the application of Missouri for statehood, the long-standing balance between the number of slave states and the number of free states would be changed.

Dred Scott Decision

In 1820, the Missouri Compromise permitted the admission of Missouri to the Union as a slave state. Admitted along with the free state of Maine, the Missouri Compromise maintained the balance between the number and free and slave states admitted to the Union. Dred Scott, born in 1799 as a slave to the Peter Blow family of Virginia, moved to St. Louis with the Blow family and was eventually sold to Dr. John Emerson, a military surgeon stationed at Jefferson Barracks.

They did not think the government had the right to tell them how they should live. Southerners felt if they stayed in the United States, the North would control them so they borke away from the northern stataes.now their were 11 stataes part of the union.

Lincoln wins presidency

The central issue of the presidential election of 1860 was bound to be slavery. Battles over the spread of slavery to new territories and states had gripped the United States throughout the 1850s, and were especially intensified by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854.

These states formed a new union called the Confederate States of America. The South gave three reasons for leaving the Union:The Confederate States felt the United States thought they had broken the Constitution. The Confederacy argued that the United States had failed to enforce the Fugitive Slave Laws. The government would not allow slavery in the new territories. The upper southern states remained with the Union at this time.
