    When tarriffs were passed, the South felt they were unfair and only favored the North. John C. Calhoun, the Vice President at the time, said that any state could nullify a federal law. When the federal government denied this, South Carolina treatened to secede, and finally Henry Clay came up with a compromise to lower the tarriff.

    Congress had many debates about how to admit states from Mexico, slave or free. Henry Clay created the compromise. it admitted California as a free state and slavery would be abolished in Washington D.C. All other territory from Mexico would be open to slavery.

    The Fugitive Slave law was passed in 1850 by congress. It permitted the capture of slaves trying to escape North for freedom. The law grew tension and was the cause of John Brown's raid in the Civil War.

    5000 proslavery people from Missouri came to vote in Kansas towards proslavery illegally. Anti-slavery opponents started their own government. Then, the proslave government attacked the the anti-slavery government. To avenge the attack, abolitionist John Brown murdered several proslavery neighbors.

    Dred scott was a slave who had lived in Illinois,a free state, and the free territory of Wisconsin before moving to Missouri, which was a slave state.The Supreme Court declared that blacks coudnt be citizens, The Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional, and that slavery was permitted in all U.S. territories.

    Attack on Harper's Ferry
    John Brown tried to inspire slaves to fight for freedom.They captured the arsenal at the army base in Harpers Ferry, Virginia to arm the slaves. Brown and his men were captured. Other abolitionists respected Brow as he was put to death, and the slavery argument heated even more.
