    Missouri Compromise
    The Southern and Northern politicians have heated debates over the growth of slavery. Henry Clay was the Great Compromiser by settling the debate by saying that Maine would be admitted as a free state and Arkansas wold be open to slavery.
  • The Nullification Crisis

    The Nullification Crisis
    Southern states like South Carolina felt that the tariffs were unfair and only supported the North. Vice President John C. Calhoun said any state could nullify a federal law it considers unconstitutional. The federal government denied South Carolina's argument, South Carolina threatened to secede. Following the Nullification Crisis, Henry Clay came up with a compromise and lowered the tariff.

    Compromise of 1850
    After the Mexican war, there were many arguments whether the new territories won from Mexico would be admitted as slave states or free states.Henry Clay helped once again to make a compromise between the North and the South. Califorina would be admitted as a free state, and Congress would not pass laws banning slavery from the rest of the territories won from Mexico.

    The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed by Congress. This act permitted people to capture African Americans who had escaped from the south to north.

    Close to 5,000 peope from nearby proslavery Missouri came ad voted fro proslavery representatives in Kansas illegally. Some Anti-slavery opponents stared their own government.

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom. He didn't believe that since he lived in a free territory he should have been freed. Dred Scott was the property of his owner and during that time proert cold not betaken away from apesn without due process of law.

    John Bron was a man whowatd to inspire slves to figt for their freedom. John Brown was planning to capture the arsenal located at the army base in Harpers Ferry, Virginia to arm the slaves. Brown and all of his men were captured. He was killed by the abolitionist
