    *John C. Calhoun said any state has the right to nullify a federal law if it's unconstitutional.
    *The government did not allow South Carolina's right to nullify so they threatened to secede.
    *Henry Clay made a compromise and the tariff was lowered
  • Fugitive Slave Act of 1850

    Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
    *The Fugitive Slave Act was passed by Congress in 1850. It allowed slaves that escaped to be captured in the North and be brought back to the South.
    *This law made things between the North and South more tense and was the one of the causes of the Civil War and John Brown's raid.

    *Congress had debates about whether or not the territories from Mexico would be free or slave states.
    *Henry Clay made a compromise to solve the problem.
    *California would be a free state and Congress would not pass any laws banning slavery in the rest of the territories.

    *5000 people from Missouri who supported slavery came to Kansas and voted for representatives who also supported slavery in Kansas illegally.
    *The people who were against slavery started their own government.
    *The anti-slavery gornment was attacked by those who supported slavery.
    *After this event John Brown recruited his sons and killed a few pro-slavery supporters.

    Dred Scott Decision
    *The court decided that Dred Scott was not free when he was in Illinois or Wisconsin where his owner was a lot, because he was not considered a person in the Constitution because African Americans were not considered citizens when the Constitution was written.
    *This decision made Abolitionists furious and caused even more tension between the North and the South.
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry

    Attack on Harpers Ferry
    *John Brown wanted slaves to fight for their freedom. He planned to capture the arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia to arm the slaves so they could defend themselves.
    *John and his men were captured, but anti-slavery supporters supported him when he was about to be killed and it raised tension in the U.S.

    • Abraham Lincoln won the Election of 1860 even though he never said what his thoughts were on slavery. *After he was elected for office more and more Southern states started to secede the United States because they did not like Lincoln.
