  • Fugitive Slave Law - 1793 and 1850

    Fugitive Slave laws were passed. This sparked huge controversy.
  • Congress passes the Missouri Compromise

    One of the first bills that has to do with with slavery vs anti-slavery. This bill says that Missouri can come in as a slave state, but all slavery is prohibited everywhere else in the Lousiana purchase above the 36th parallel.
  • Underground Railroad

    The Underground Railroad get its officaial name. This was named after steam engine railroads. It was a system that helped slaves escape to the North. This incresed the number of abolishion supporters.
  • First Gold is Discovered in California

    James W. Marshall discovers gold in California. This causes a bunch of immigration which cause more inbalance when choosing if the state should be slave or non slave.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    This treaty was signed after the Mexican American War. The treaty said that Mexico would sell the land in the United States to the Americans. This included the states Arizona, Nevada, California, Utah and parts of New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming. However this caused a lot of problems. No one could agree if these would be slave states or non-slave states.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    A compromise suggested by Henry Clay. It helped divide the newly aquired states into slave states and non slave states.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin Published

    A book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Uncle Tom's Cabin was inspired by the fugative slave law. This book ceperated the pro slavery people and the anti slavery people.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    The Kanas-Nebaska act was a bill passed to try and make peace with the people over the issue of slavery. This act did the oppisite and ended up making more violence and hate. This is a huge step in the journey to the Civil War.
  • Dred Scott

    A slave that sued because he was living in a free state but was not free. Eventually this reached the Supreme Court which ruled that Dred Scott was not a free slave. The north was not very happy about it.
  • Election of Abraham Lincoln

    The South did not like Lincoln, so when he became president the South finally had enough, so they secceded.
