  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    1In 1818, Missouri Comprmise petitioned Congress for admission to the Union as a state. New York represntitive James Tallmadge proposed an admendment to ban slavery in Missouri even though there was more than 2,000 slaves living there. It was decided that Missouri would be free and the states below would be slave states.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    Fugitive slave act was passed by Congress on September 18, 1850 as part of the Compromise of 1850. One of the controversial acts of the 11850 compromise declared that all runway slaves should be brought back to their masters. Abolitionsists nicknamed it the Bloodround law for the dogs that were used to track the runaway slaves.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    2 Uncle Tom's Cabin was a novel against slavery written by Harriet Breecher Stowe. This novel was about a slave named Uncle Tom, it was supposed to show the effects of slavery and what happened to slaves behind closed doors. This really strengthed the conflict between the North and South. It also altered many peoples opinions about slavery.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was an African American slave who travled to Wisconsin with his master for four years. Scott's master was breaking laws because Wisconsin was a free state so, Scott should have been free. Scott's master died so then he should have been free but wasn't. Dred went to court to sue because he should have been free. His case made it to Federal court and the court decided that he was not concidered a US citizen so he couldn't sue.
  • Harpor's Ferry

    Harpor's Ferry
    John Brown, a strong abolitionist, and some other men raided Harpor's Ferry on October 16, 1859. These men decided to raid Harpor's Ferry to start an armed slave revolt. They gained control of guns from an armory and supplied slaves with guns.

    The anti-Slavery and pro-slavery conflict took place in Kansas Territory and Missouri between 1854-1861. The conflict question was whether Kansas would enter Union as a free state or slave. It was a violent war and very bloody. On January 29,1861, Kansas was admitted to the Union as a free state.
