    Eli Whitney's Cotton Gin
    The invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney was made to make it easier for slaves who picked cotton. But in fact, the exact opposite happened. Because it made it so much easier and quicker, it actually increased slavery. The south would be impressed and happy about this invention.
  • War of 1812

    War of 1812
    This war would end up causing problems in the future for America. It would cause the division of political parties and views which would lead to arguments of slavery and states and what not.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    Ensured the Fugitive Slave Act. This act stated that all runaway slaves, upon capture, would be returned to their masters. This would cause problems because free slaves in the north would be confused with runaway slaves from the south and would be captured against their will. This caused many northerners to be angry.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    An anti-slavery novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe. This is significant because it opened many people's eyes to the harshness and horribleness of slavery and made the understand why it needed to be ended. This would cause more tention between the north and south.

    Kansas was a border state in between the North and South. They wanted use popular sovereignty to decide whether it was going to be a free or slave state. The people would begin to argue and a small war would outbreak. This would increase sectionalism because there would be an increase in fighting between the north and south.

    In a court of Congress, Brooks would beat SUmner over the head with a cane because they are having a heated argument. This would increase sectionalism because the South would see Brooks as a hero, North woould not agree with that. People would store handguns in their seats because they could not trust eachother.
  • John Brown and Harpers Island

    John Brown and Harpers Island
    John Brown was a white abolitionist. He believed that god talked to him and he would have various visions. John Brown would lead his sons in raid of an armory on Harper's Island. He would take over the armory by force and have a stand off with the Virginian militia. He would be captured and hanged. He would be known as a martyr to the North and a terrorist to the South. This would increase sectionalism because it shows Northern aggression.
