The invention of the cotton gin (1794)

The cotton gin was originally created to aid in stopping the slave population when in the industrial revolution era by Eli Whitney. But this actually did the exact opposite. Before the slaves could only make a few pounds of cotton by hand in a day but could now make close to 50 pounds in a day leading to more production of cotton and more needs for slaves.
