    The Nullification Crisis
    Southern States felt tariffs were unfair and only supported the north. John C. Calhoun said any state could nullify and federal law it considers unconstitutional. Henry Clay made a compromise lowering tariffs.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Henry Clay helped make a compromise between the north and south. California would be a free state and Congress's wouldnt ban slavery from states won from Mexico. Some thought this helped save the Union.
  • Missouri Comprimise

    Missouri Comprimise
    The country was debating over slave states and free states being admitted to the union. Henry Clay said that Maine would be a free state and Arkansas would be open to slavery. This also drew a new line for slave states.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    Fugitive slave act was passed in 1850 by the Congress. The act permitted the capture of African Americans who had fled to the north to escape bondage.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    5000 people from Missouri voted in Kansas for proslavery repersenitives illegally. Antislavery opponents started their own government. The antislavery goverment was attacked by proslavery forces. To avenge the attack, extreme aboitionist John Brown murdered some of his neighbors.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was a slave who argued that because he lived in a free state he should have been emancipated. The court then ruled: Scott wasn't free based on his residence, African Americas were not considered citizens when the constitution was drafted in 1787, he was the property of his owner and can't be taken with out due process.
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry

    Attack on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown wanted to inspire slaves to fight for their freedom, he planned to capture the arsenal to arm the slaves. Brown and his men were ten were killed. Abolitionists saluted John Brown as he wasn't to death, the issue of slavery had raised tension in America to the breaking point.

    Abraham Lincoln won the election. Southern states begin to secede from the Union shortly after Linclon is elected.
