    The Cotton Gin created by Eli Whitney made cottong very profitable. Before the cotton gin was created processing cotton took a long time. After the creation of the cotton gin, 50 times more cottong could be produced. It made cotton more porfitable, which in turn created a greater need for slaves.
  • Nat Turner Rebellion

    Nat Turner Rebellion
    Nat Turner was a slave who gathered a group of 16 other slaves and revolted. In one single night he killed 57 white people. After that night he went into hiding for two months before he was caught and hanged. The signifigence this event had was it showcased the horrors of slavery to the north. It also made Virginia reconsider having slaves at all.

    Southerners reffered to the tariff as the taridd of abomination. Another tariff they were not pleased with. Although the tariff was supposed to make up for the tariff of 1828, which also favored the north, southerners were still very displeased. The government had seemed to sidline the south. The displeasure of the tariff in South Carolina led them to nullify the tariff, then President Jackson put them under Martial Law.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    This was a novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. This novel supporting the abolitionist movement was a best-seller at the time, read by millions. This book is said to have started the Civil War. It was an influential piece of writing because it helped people understand what slavery was like. One scene in the book portrays a Slave mother being sold and ripped away from her children. The emotion in the book made people believe it to be morally wrong.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    Bleeding Kansas was a bunch of different violent attacks between free state supporters and people who were pro-slavery. All these acts of violence were fought over whether Kansas Should have been a free-state or a state with slaves. When the Kansas-Nebraska Act was created, the Missouri Compromise was nullified. The decision was left up to popular sovereignty, and the state would decide what they were. People from both sides came into Kansas to sway the direction of the decision.
  • Dred Scott V. Sanford

    Dred Scott V. Sanford
    When Dred Scott took his case to the Supreme Court for his freedom, he got a totally different outcome. The judge Said that because Scott was a slave, he was not a citizen: therefore, he didn't have the right to a court hearing. The judge did not stop there, He also said that slaves were property and they couldn't be taken away by the federal government. This case also made the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional, which opened up every state to slavery.

    The Election of Abe Licoln was important because Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery, and his southern counterparts did not. When he won the election, several southern states suceeded from the union. Also, the civil war was never totally about slavery until abouyt a year into the war when Licoln issued the Emancipation Proclaimation.
