    SC was the first state to succeed. The election of President Lincoln caused this.

  • Lincoln’s First Inaugural Address

    Said he wouldn't interfere with Slavery laws.Was against secession from the Union.

  • Confederate forces fire on Fort Sumter

    "34-hour bombardment". Roughly 3,330 shells by 43 confederates

  • Lincoln suspends habeas corpus

    Forbid the transaction of habeas corpus between Phillidelphia and D.C. Means no court summons, mainly.

  • Richmond becomes the capital of the Confederacy

    When Virginia seceded, the confederacy capital was relocated. From South Carolina to Virginia.

  • First Battle of Bull Run is fought

    AKA battle of Manassas. First main battle on land of the Civil War.

  • Jefferson Davis elected President of Confederacy

    Ran with no opposition. Confirmed the confederacy's decision.

  • The Merrimack and the Monitor fight of the Virginia coast

    Also known as the Battle of Hampton Roads. Neither won for the most part.

  • Battle of Shiloh

    AKA Battle of Pittsburg Landing. It was a victory for the Union.

  • Robert E. Lee is named commander of the Army of Northern Virginia

    The army of North Virginia was very successful. basically commanded every Confederacy army.

  • Battle of Antietam

    Only a one-day battle. The Union won this battle.

  • Battle of Fredericksburg

    Over 200,000 soldiers participated in this battle. Was a Confederacy victory.

  • Emancipation Proclamation is announced

    This was very important. Declared all slaves are free.

  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    Was a week-long battle. Yet another Confederate victory.

  • Battle of Gettysburg

    3-day long battle, both sides suffered damaging losses. The Union won this battle.

  • Confederates surrender at Vicksburg

    Pemberton surrendered Vicksburg to Grant. End of Civil War.

  • New York City Draft Riots

    Competition for jobs resulted in riots. 5 days of destructive riots.

  • Lincoln gives his Gettysburg Address

    One of the most famous speeches. "Turning point in the Civil War"

  • Atlanta is captured

    Loss for the Confederacy. Great gain for the Union

  • Abraham Lincoln defeats George McClellan to win re-election

    Easy win for Lincoln. Electoral college was 212-12

  • Sherman begins his March to the Sea

    Helped lead to Confed. surrendering. A major campaign in the war effort.

  • Congress passes the 13th Amendment

    Huge accomplishment. When ratified it abolished slavery.

    Provided the necessities to newly freed slaves and southerners.

    Gave his inaugural address at the start of his second term.

    One of the most monumentous events leading to the death of the confederacy.

  • Robert E. Lee surrenders at Appomattox

    Ends the Civil war when he surrenders his troops in a final futile effort.

  • Abraham Lincoln Assassinated

    Was killed by John Wilkes Booth in a movie theater

  • John Wilkes Booth is killed

    Unknown to this day whether he was shot by a soldier, or shot himself.
