  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    Franklin pierce became President he planned to uphold the Fugitive slave Act. Stephen Douglas came one year later and suggested expending the nation to two territories Kansas and Nebraska. These two territories would enter as free states because of their locations. The south objected so they decided on popular sovereignty or letting the states decide.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was slave in Missouri, his owner was a doctor. The doctor moved to a free state Illinois and then later to Wisconsin. The doctor died and later Scott sued for his freedom. Scott said that since he lived in a free state he should be set free. The case eventually reached the supreme court. The court ruled against Scott because the constitution says you cannot take property from a man. Slaves are considered property so he would not be a free man.

    Abolitionist Fredrick Douglas argued that slavery has to be abolished by war. Lincoln thought there was a better way to solve the issue than war.

    Abolitionist John Brown led an attack on Harper's Ferry to establish a stronghold independently for a group of freed slaves.
  • Lincoln Election

    Lincoln Election
    Lincoln was a Republican candidate running against Stephen Douglas. Lincoln was against slavery. Douglas was for Popular Sovereignty. Democrats were divided so Lincoln won in a landslide.
  • Attack on fort Sumter

    Attack on fort Sumter
    Fort Sumter was a U.S fort guarding Charleston harbor. A day after lincoln took office he got a message saying that the fort was low on supplies and that the south demanded their surrender. Lincoln sent an unarmed expedition to bring the fort supplies the north would not fire unless the south fired at them.

    Lincoln Inaugural Address
    At his address he spoke to the south directly, he mixed words of toughness and peace. He said that he would not permit the succession because the union and it´s states are perpetual.
