    Emmitt was just visiting family and supposedly started flirted with a white woman. He was murdered by Roy Bryant being forced into his car and beat to death. His body was left near a river in Money, Mississippi. His mom chose to have an open castket to show the abuse and horrors of what was really goiung on at the time.

    eliminated segregation in schools. equal schooling for races

    White Citizens Council
    Promoted white supremacy and power. Did anything to ensure segregation and mistreatment of blacks

    Many of the schools did not enforce desegregation and the Brown v Board made them enforce it and hurry up the process of desegregation
  • Arrest of Rosa Parks

    key leader in the NAACP. Rosa sat in the front of the bus and refused to give up her seat. She was arrested for her protest. Spread a message of hope and nonviolent rights

    Blacks began to protest against bus companies by not riding them anymore due to the Rosa Parks movement. In the end, these protests were successful as segregation on the buses was deemed illegal.

    The lLittle Rock 9 were under risk of being heavily injured and the police could not protect them from the mob on their way to school. Eisenhower calls in federal troops to escort the Little Rock 9 into and out of the school safely.

    Group formed to give children a bigger voice in the civil rights movement. There were many nonviolent protests and arretsts but the movement was successful in gaining freedom

    Black students sat at a segregated restaurant. They were trying to make a statement but got arrested. This was impactful though because it spread a message and eventually led to desegregation.
  • Freedom Rides

    Were organized by SNCC and CORE. group of whites and blacks riding together to stop segregation. Ended badly when they were bombed in Alabama and riots broke out.

    Kennedy was riding a motorcycle during his campaign. Fans lined the streets and cheered for him. All of a sudden shots were heard and Kennedy was shot in the neck. His driver rushed to the hospotal but Kennedy would die too soon. Lee Harvey was the suspected shooter and he was killed days after. The shootings happened in Dallas Texas

  • Murders of Goodman, Chaney, and Schwerner

    Murders of Goodman, Chaney, and Schwerner
    These three men were associated with COFO and CORE and where kidnapped and murdered in Neshoba County Mississippi. These men were trying to get African Americans the right to vote. They were sentenced to jail time but before they could get to the jail, their car was stopped and the three men were killed and later buried.

  • Malcolm X assassiantion

    Malcolm X assassiantion
    Assassination of Malcolm X, February 21st 1965 . Malcolm X was giving a speech to his Afro-American Unity organization when he was shot by a rival muslim group. This event took place in Washington heights at the Audubon ballroom. The assassin shot X in the body while he was giving a speech knocking him down and causing to bleed to death. The assassin escaped with a few more people to help him under heavy gunfire. The assassin was not found and the nation of Islam denied the shootings.

    Many African Americans began a 54 mile march to register to vote in Montgomery. They were met by many racist townspeople and faced police brutality. Eventaully, with the help from the National Guard, they were able to reach their destination and shortly after that, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed.

    Formed in Oakland California, the Black Panther party, were focused of helping and protecting fellow blacks from police brutality. Known as heros in the black community
  • Loving v Virginia

    Loving v Virginia
    Allowed interracial marriage after a white man tried to marry a black woman and virginia denied their request. They took this action to supreme court were they won the case.
  • Minneapolis Riotsd

    Minneapolis Riotsd
    On their way to reach equality, blacks started riots in Minneapolis, yelling and screaming and burning buildings. Police were involved and one casualty was reported.
  • Detroit Riots

    Detroit Riots
    A very bloody riot, in the the "long hot summer of 1967". Police and blacks were fighting in the streets, numerous deaths were reported. At one point, the US National Guard and the Army were called and this was by far the bloodiest event in the civil rights era.
  • MLK assassination

    This event took place on April 4th 1968. King was shot on his balcony in a Memphis motel. He was there to support a workers strike and was shot in the jaw on his way to dinner. The assassin was James Earl Ray, A hater of MLK.
