    Court case that made segregation in the United States acceptable, resulted in the Jim Crow laws
  • NAACP created

    NAACP created
    Civil rights organization, advocated for desegregation through court cases. Helped with Brown vs. Board of Education and won.
  • 19th Amendment

    Gave voting rights to women
  • ERA proposed

    ERA proposed
    Offered equal rights to women in the United States.

    Harry Truman gave out this executive order, which demanded equal treatment towards all people in the military

    Court case that made everything in Plessy v. Ferguson null and void, made schools integrated, win for civil rights activists
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Montgomery Bus Boycott
    Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to stand up on the bus, and they ended up making a boycott of their city’s buses.
  • SCLC formed

    Formed by Martin Luther King Jr., fought for equality for African American people using civil disobedience.
  • Little Rock 9

    Nine students applied to be the first African Americans to attend Central High School. This resulted in controversy across the state and bullying towards the nine.

    Civil rights organization for the youth, involved in many civil rights movements, all peaceful, such as freedom rides and sit-ins.
  • Freedom Rides

    A form of peaceful protest, meant to desegregate transportation, allowed blacks and whites to sit together.

    Dr. King’s: “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”
    Martin Luther King Jr was arrested and sent to Birmingham Jail and wrote his letter, stating that people have the moral duty to break unjust laws
  • March on Washington: “I have a dream” speech

    March on Washington: “I have a dream” speech
    Civil rights event, 250,000 people gathered in front of the Lincoln memorial to hear MLK speak, caused the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    LBJ signed this law, causing the US to permanently erase any remaining segregation laws. This meant that the Jim Crow laws implemented beforehand were gone, and it became illegal to discriminate based on race.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    An act also signed by LBJ, got rid of the laws enforcing certain requirements to vote, if you are 18 or older you can vote no matter what.
  • Thurgood Marshall appointed to the Supreme Court

    Thurgood Marshall appointed to the Supreme Court
    A civil rights activist and attorney who argued against segregation in Brown vs. The Board of Education. He won which resulted in integrated schools. He was then appointed to the supreme court much later up until 1991.
  • AIM

    AIM
    Initially formed to achieve better living for Native American people, as they were living on reservations at the time. Moved Native Americans to live in Alcatraz. Eventually started advocating for all Native American rights.
