    • Dred Scott v. Sandford

    Dredd Scott v. Sanford decided that slaves were not American Citizens. This meant that African Americans did not have the same rights as a U.S. Citizen. This case was on March 6 1857.

    13th Amendment

    The 13th Amendment was passed on January 31st of 1865 and was ratified on December 6th of 1865. This amendment abolished slavery in the U.S. It only allowed for punishments of crime.

    The 14th Amendment was passed by the Senate June 8th 1866 and ratified on July 9th 1868. This amendment gave the right to of citizenship to all "born or naturalized in the United States which included enslaved people .The states were not allowed to put any rule that didn't allow people to become citizens.

    The 15th Amendment was passed by Congress February 26thh 1869 and ratified February 3 1870. This amendment gave African American men the right to vote. Even if they were previously slaves.

    Jim Crow Laws were local and state laws that were different based off the color of your skin whether you were black or white. It began around the late 1800s and some rules still applied up until the 1960s.

    Plessy v. Ferguson

    The Plessy v Ferguson case was from April 13 1896 to May 18 1896. This case held the "separate but equal" doctrine which allowed for example two different schools for black and whites as long as they were "equal'. In the case Plessy refused to sit in a train car for black people and was in the white train car.

    The 19th Amendment was passed by the senate on June 4 1919 and was ratified August 18 1920. This amendment gave women the right to vote. After the long fight and journey for this right.

    Brown v. Board of Education took place from December 9 1952 to May 17 1954. The Brown family won the case as the Supreme Court saw the segregation in schools was unconstitutional which slowly allowed for black people to join white schools however it took a long time.

    The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a law passed in 1964. This law ensured that you cannot discriminate people based on their gender, race, color, religion, origin, and sex. When hiring at jobs employers were not to discriminated based off these factors.

    In 1965 on August 5th President signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This Act ensured that discrimination did not occur when it came to voting. Since many southern states still had discrimination issues.

    On September 24 1965 Affirmative Action was put into place. This order ensured there was not to be discrimination based on race, religion, color, or national origin when it came to employment. It was put into place to improve employment opportunities for minorities.0

    Reed v. Reed took place October 19 1971. This case showed that when someone is named the administrator of an estate that there can not be discrimination based of sexes. The treatment of men and women is to be equal.

    The Equal Rights Amendment was passed by the Senate on March 22 1972. However the Amendment was to be ratified by June 30 192 but was not ratified by this date because 35 states didn't ratify it. This amendment would have ensured that men and women were equal.

    Regents of the University of California v. Bakke

    This case was June 28 1978. In this case it was decided that colleges can not base a persons admission on someone's race. This case declared racial "quotas" unconstitutional.

    Bower v. Hardwick

    This case was March 31 1986. This case said that people did not have the right to consensual privacy of homosexuality activity. States could criminalize same-sex couples.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Americans with Disabilities Act

    ADA was put into action July 26 1990. This act gave rights to people with disabilities. This law prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities whether in a public or private place or at a job.

    The Motor Voter Act was signed May 20 1993 however was not put into effect until January 1 1995. This law was purposeful in helping Americans be able to register to vote easier. It allowed people to register to vote at DMVs.
  • Lawrence v. Texas

    Lawrence v. Texas

    Lawrence v. Texas was March 26 2003. In this case it was given that same-sex couples had equal rights. They were able to activities without being punished in all states.
  • Obergefell v. Hodges

    Obergefell v. Hodges

    In this case on June 26 2015 states were to recognize same-sex couples. They were to be able to have the same licenses as other couples. It was told that it was a fundamental right.
