Dred Scott v Standford was a case in which the court ruled that African Americans did not have the right to sue, and going even further, they stated the court did not have the power to abolish slavery. -
The 13th Amendment abolished slavery and any involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for a crime. -
The 14th amendment granted citizenship to all people born or naturalized in the United States, and provided citizens with equal protection under the United States laws, this included formally enslaved people. -
The 15th Amendment "prohibits the federal government and each state from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that citizen's race, color, or previous condition of servitude.". It was one of the many reconstructing amendments. -
The Plessy v Ferguson case "was a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court that upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation laws for public facilities as long as the segregated facilities were equal in quality, a doctrine that came to be known as "separate but equal". This case may seem as though racism was being left behind, however it was not. -
The 19th Amendment prohibits the United States from denying the right of citizens to vote based on sex, therefor giving women the right to vote. -
This case had to do with the segregation in schools. The supreme court ruled that segregation in public schools is unconstitutional and sided with Brown because of this reason. This was the beginning of the end of segregation in public places like school. -

The Voting Rights Act of 1965, suspended literacy tests, empowered federal officials to register to vote, to ensure citizens could vote, and count ballots, it also prohibited states from changing voting procedures without federal permission. -
This case was one that happened because of the sexual discrimination that happened when it came to becoming "administer of estates". Women were looked down upon in this position. The court ruled it is unconstitutional to look at men and women differently in cases like this. -
This prohibited any sex-discrimination withing any schools or within education in general that receives federal income. -
The Regents of the University of California v. Bakke was a case that happened because Bakke was rejected from this college for reasons solely based on his race, while he exceeded all of the academic requirements. The court had no majority ruling however, it was stated that race was constitutional as an admission factor. -
This law was made to prohibit any discrimination based off of a disability of any sort. -
The Obergefell v. Hodges case "the United States ruled that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples by both the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution". This was more recent in history, proving that civil rights are important and growing.
