  • Scott v. Sanford

    Scott was a slave who sued his owner for freedom because he was transported to a northern (free) State but was taken back to the south. The court ruled that he was property and according to the 5th Amendment the government can't take away property w/out just compensations.

    Reconstruction Era/Amendments

    Reconstruction was after the Civil war. The south was divided into 5 military districts in an attempt to enforce the 13th,14th,15th and 24th Amendments. The southern states were forced to ratify the 14th amendment before they could rejoin the union. The KKK tried to push back on the amendments.

    Jim Crow Era

    Created by whites to enforce racial segregation/reinstated slavery by other means
    -Denied Af. Am. the right to make/enforce contracts or sue
    -Denied Equal Civil Rights
    -Can't serve on a jury
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy sat in the "whites only" section on a bus, got arrested (on purpose). The Court ruled that Jim Crow segregation was legal and "separate but equal" accommodations for blacks were legal under the Constitution.
  • 19th Amendment

    Gave women the right to vote.

    The Scottsboro Boys

    Were accused of raping 2 white girls. Were denied their due process rights during the trial. The boys had inadequate lawyers and an all-white jury therefore making the trial unfair.
