    Civil Right Movements in the United States
  • 13th Admendment

    -Slavery was outlawed everywhere in the United States and all territories controlled by the United States.
    -Slaves were officially set free from white people's rule.
  • 14th Admendment

    -The amendment was designed to grant citizenship to and protect the civil liberties of recently freed slaves.
    -Slave now had a new found freedom within the United States as a citizen
  • 15th Admendment

    -The 15th Amendment was the last of the “Reconstruction Amendments” to be adopted.
    -It was designed to prohibit discrimination against voters on the basis on race.

    -The United States provided men and women with equal voting rights.
    -Allowed women to be considered eqaul to men for the first time.
  • Excutive Order of 1948

    Excutive Order of 1948
    -Executive order issued by president Haryy S. Truman that abolished racial segregation amongst the armed forces.
    -Allowed blachs blacks to fight amongs whites in combat.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    -Legally ended segregation in schools.
    -African Americans were able to attednd the same school as whites and recive the same education,
    -This gave African Americans hope for the future.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Montgomery Bus Boycott
    -The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a protest in 1955 that was to oppose the cities racial segregation policies in public transportaion.
    -Led to the Supreme Court establishing that Montgomery, Alabama's laws were unconstitutional.
  • Rosa Parks

    Rosa Parks
    -Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white.
    -Marked a high point in the civil rights movement.
    -Rosa Parks had been fighting for civil rights for 10 years but this was the first time she had deliberately broken a rule and set an example for fellow civil rights activists.

    Civil Rights Act of 1957
    -Gave African Americans the right to vote.
    -They could finally have some what of a say in political maters through their right to vote.
    -Led to the idea that African Americans were equall to othere U.S. citizens.
    -Signed by Eisenhower.
  • 24th Admendment

    -Eliminated the poll tax that kept many African Americans from voting.
    -This caused many African Americans to go vote and have a say in politics.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    -Outlawed all forms of discrimmination among African Americans.
    -One major form was racial segregation in publlic.
    -African Americans could now go to school, eat, and ride together with whites on the same bus.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Voting Rights Act of 1965
    -Law that outlawed discriminatory voting practices.
    -African Americans could now freely go to the polls and vote without fear and there votes would actually be counted.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1968

    -Law that provide equal housing oppertunities regardless of race.
    -African Americans could freely live and buy house where they want and not be turned away becasu of race
