    Ended slavery, although it wasnt fair the slaves were now free.

    14th Ammendment
    Allows the free slaves to now have a chance to become citizens rather than property. Now they can be apart of society!
  • 15th Ammendment

    15th Ammendment
    Allowed the blacks to vote which made them be able to partake in society more. But in the south they would make you take a test they purposely want you to fail so you cant vote.

    Plessey v Ferguson
    Louisiana legislature passed the seperate car act, which caused the "seperate but equal" environment to make everyone feel more comfortable and feel safe.
  • Delgado v Bastrop ISD

    Delgado v Bastrop ISD
    LULAC filed lawsit in Texas disctrict court on behalf of the parents of the mexican-american students in public schools in Del Rio, TX. Got to keep segregating because they claimed to be segregating by poor education and bad attendance records.
  • Mendez v Westminister

    Mendez v Westminister
    Fought for desegregation in schools, judge agreed it was unconstitutional because of the 14th ammendment making equal protection of laws. In the case they say "we have the same rights" and "we are all human beings".

    Executive Order 9981
    This was a policy that president Truman created to have desegregation in the armed forces. No longer could you regard anyone due to race, color, religion or national origin. Equal treatment and opportunities arose in all of the armed forces.

    Sweatt wanted to be a lawyer and attend University of Texas at Austin, the state had to admit him because they could no longer segregate. Painter wrote "this applicant is a citizen of texas and duly qualified for admission into the law school at the University of Texas, save and except for the fact that he is a negro."

    Case arose because a mexican american cotton picker was intoxidated and shot Joe Espinosa, was indicted for murdering him. Before the trial they argued that people of mexican decent had been systematically excluded from serving as apart of the jury. This made the jury decision unfair for mexican american cases.
  • Brown v Board of Education

    Brown v Board of Education
    Kansas law let cities have seperate schools for african americans and whites. Case arose because an african american 3rd grader and her family lived in Topeka, they lived about 3 blocks from an elementary school but she could not attend because it was a white school only so she had to ride the bus to attend the african american school about 21 blocks away.

    Was suppose to make equalness more common, but this act did not have enough enforcement on it and things did not really change in society.

    Created more equality to voting due to abolishing poll taxes on the ballot.

    Prohibits discrimination against any race, color, religion or national origin.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Voting Rights Act of 1965
    Eliminates literacy tests given to vote, poll tax and any grandfather clauses that restrict black voting.
  • Edgewood v Kirby

    Edgewood v Kirby
    Edgewood ISD filed a class action suit challenging Texas' finance system for public schools. They began to fund for minimum education for children, this led to better education for students in wealthier school districts and worse education for the poor students. But funding for schools began to happen.
