    In 1960 the COBOL (Common Business-Oriented Language) was invented by the Pentagon and several computer manufacturers. It was a programming language that was developed to run on any computer with a compiler. The committee made this tombstone because they were worried that the language would die, but it still used to this day.

    IBM 1311 Disk Storage Drive

    In 1962 the IBM 1311 Disk Storage Drive was invented by IBM. It was the first removable disk made by IBM, allowing stored data to be moved between computers. Each pack weighed about 10lbs, and held 2 million characters.

    In 1963, ASCII was invented by Bob Bemer, an IBM engineer. It is a standardized letter system where symbols are organized by a numbered code, allowing letters and symbols to be accessed and calculated when programming. This allows programs to sort alphabetically.

    In 1966 the HP 2116A computer was invented by Hewlett-Packard Company. This was HP’s first computer. It was a commercial product, and their first product to use integrated circuits.

    In 1969 the RS-232-C standard port was invented by the Electronic Industries Association. This port became the standard and allowed computers and peripheral devices to transmit information one bit at a time. It allows data to be exchanged between two devices.
