First smartphone released to the market

The first smartphone was developed by IBM and BellSouth, which came out to the public in 1993. Althought basic compared to today's standards “Simon” had a touch screen that was capable of accessing email and sending faxes.

First blogging website

The first person to be considered as a 'blogger' was created by Justin Hall through the website 'links.net'. However, Hall did not consider this a blog as of yet, and he called it his 'personal homepage'.

Six Degrees - first social media platform

Founded by Andrew Weinreich, six degrees was considered the first social media platform and combined popular features such as profiles, friends lists and school affiliations in one service.

Social Media boom

Friendster. was the beginning to the social media boom that we experience today. Friendster used a degree of separation concept similar to that of the now-defunct SixDegrees.com, refined it into a routine dubbed the “Circle of Friends,” and promoted the idea that a rich online community can exist only between people who truly have common bonds. Within the first year, friendster has over a three million registered users.

Linkedin was introduced as the first professional social media platform that connected professionals together. It was a large difference between the other social media platforms that were already being used such as friendster. and six degrees where it is connecting professionals together to connect over professions, rather than their social lives.

First Social Media Platform for Young Adults

In 2003, myspace also was introduced, and was the first social media platform that appealed to young adults. MySpace in the 2000's is what FaceBook is today. It combined music, music videos and a feature filled environment that allowed young people to connect not only with each other, but with their favourite celebrities and musicians.

In 2003 facebook was created by a harvard student, Mark Zuckerberg. It was originally created to connect student of harvard university together, however, was too large to remain within it origin. It now has over 1.3 billion active users and has become the most used social media within the last decade.
