Explorer and navigator Christopher Columbus was born in 1451, in the Republic of Genoa (Italy). Christopher Columbus Father was Domenico Colombo. His mother was Susanna Fontanarossa.

In 1465 Columbus was a teenager when he first set sail. On October 12, Columbus himself claimed that he had seen land first. The land turned out to be a small island in the present-day Bahamas. Columbus named the island San Salvador

In 1476 Christopher worked as a sailor. His ship was once sunk by pirates. I bet he was great at making ship until one sunk.

In 1479 Christopher married a lady named Felipa Perestrella e Moniz. They lived in Portugal. Portugal is a southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain and the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1480 Christopher Columbus made his first big voyages. He sailed between Portugal and Iceland. He swam to shore and made his way to Lisbon. Genoese friends took him in and later and found him berth on an Iceland ship.

In 1484 Columbus wanted to make a new voyage. He wanted to find a western route from Europe to Asia. He asked for help from Portugal and England,but he was refused.

Columbus arrived at Palos, Spain in 1485. After traveling from Portugal. Columbus took Diego, his son with him too.

In 1491, Columbus asked for financial help from the king and queen of Spain. They definitely said yes. The deal was he would get 10% of the profit from the trips.

On August 1492, Columbus set sail with three ships. The Pinta,the Nina,and the Santa Maria. Christopher sailed on the Santa Maria.

On October 1492 Christopher and his crew made landfall. They thought they had reached Asia. They were wrong, they had reached the American continent.

On March 1493, Columbus sailed along the coasts. He sailed along the coast by what would become the Bahamas. When he found nothing valuable he returned to back to Spain.

On September 24, 1493,Columbus left from Spain for his second voyage with about 1,200 men. Unlike the low key first voyage, the second voyage was a massive effort. The second voyage brought European animals like horses, sheep,cattle and settlers to America for the first time.

On May 30, 1498, the goal for the 3rd journey was bring supplies for the settlement and explore further south. When Christopher Columbus went from Spain, this time from the port of Sanlucar.The group of ships landed on 19 of June at the Canary Islands.

On May 11, 1502, Christopher Columbus set out on his fourth and final voyage to the New World. He had four ships and his mission was to explore uncharted areas to the west of the Caribbean. Columbus did explore parts of southern Central America, but his ships got damaged by a hurricane and it fell apart while he was exploring. Columbus and his men were stranded on Jamaica for about a year before being rescued. They returned to Spain in late 1500´s

On May 20, 1506, the great Italian explorer Christopher Columbus died in Valladolid, Spain. Columbus was the first European to explore the Americas. Since the Vikings set up colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland in the 10th century.
