Christopher Columbus was born on October 3rd 1451 in Genoa Italy, he was the eldest of five children.

Columbus first set sail in 1471 when he was 20 years old. He was a seafarer (person that works on a ship).

Columbus married and got a son, Diego.

In 1482 Columbus asked the King of Portugal for ships and men. His proposal was declined.

In 1485 Columbus proposed the royalty of Spain to give him ships and men for his expedition. Again his proposal was declined.

Finally after already trying to persuade the royalty of Spain for six years Queen Isabella from Spain finally approved his proposal and she risked her money and even her finest jewels for Columbus to have three ships and a crew of men for his expedition.

On August 13 Columbus sailed away with three ships departing from Puerto de Palos Spain.

On March 15 Columbus returned home with all his discoveries from his adventure.

On September 25 Columbus went on his second expedition.

On November 3 Columbus reached an island in the new world thinking he was in the West Indies.

On May 30 Columbus set off for his third journey to the New World. He was the first european to set foot on a mainland of South America.

Finally after more than a year he returned from his second journey.

It was his 4th attempt to find a sea route to the Indies and his 13 year old son came with. He did not find anything.

Columbus died of a heart attack. The loss was a great tragedy to many people.
