At 0435, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake occured near Darfield. This earthquake set in motion an aftershock sequence that is still continuing now, 9months later. The earthquake was felt all over the South Island and caused liquifaction but no fatalities.

At 2221, a magnitude 5.0 was felt. It was centred 30 km East of Darfield, 12km deep.

At 1919, magnitude 4.5 aftershock occured. It was centred 20km SW of Christchurch and 4km deep.

A magnitude 4.9 aftershock ruptured at 1030. It was 12km deep and within 5km of Christchurch.

At 0212, a magnitude 4.4 was felt. It was placed at 10km SW of Christchurchand 7km deep.

At 1255, a magnitude 6.3 aftershock occured. It caused widespread damage as well as liquifaction. There were 181 casualties due to it, making it the second most fatal earthquake in NZ history. ( Napier, 1931, 256 casualties) Click here to see footage from within the red zone.

At 2147, a magnitude 5.1 aftershock shook Christchurch. It was centred 10km East of Christchurch at a depth of 10km.

At 0708, a magnitude 5.2 aftershock occured. It was centred 20km NW of Oxfort ad a depth of 9 km.

At 0304, a magnitude 5.3 aftershock ruptured. It was centred 20km NE of Leeston and15km deep.

At 1420, another magnitude 6.3 occured. It resulted in more damage to buildings as well as widespread liquifaction. No lives were lost during this aftershock. Click here to see footage from the aftershock.
