On this day at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, General Robert E. Lee surrendered the confederate army. The end of the civil war upset Booth and is the main reason for Lincoln’s assassination. -
CH. 2
April fourteenth eighteen fifty-six, Lincoln was enjoying a play at Ford's Theatre when John Wilkes Booth assassinated Lincoln by shooting him in the head. -

Lewis Powell, following Booth's directions, attacked the seward family. Frederick Seward was struck to death and William Seward, Powell's target, was badly injured but still lived. -

Booth and David Harold escape the city and leave Washington into the open country, starting the manhunt. -

Stanton sent a request to the chief of police for his best detectives to assist in investigation of the assassinations. -

Lincoln took his final breath and his heart stopped beating at 7:22 and 10 seconds. -

Easter Sunday 1865, Black Easter, news was spread of Lincoln's assassination and death, making that Easter a day of mourning. -

Lewis Powell, Sam Arnold, Michael O'Laughlen and Edman Spangler are arrested for helping Booth with his plan. -

A cavalry officer decided to pursue Samuel Mudd which ends up giving them a path to get to Booth. -

As described in the book, this day is the most solemn day in the history of the nation. Thousands of people waited hours to see the open casket with one of the most significant Americans that ever lived inside. -

Samuel Mudd is questioned by the cavalry about Booth and finally after hours of questioning Mudd claimed he helped Booth escape. Mudd was able to help Booth by giving him more time to run but now the calvary knows where he is. -

Finally, nine days after the assassination Booth and David have set foot on Virginia soil. -

Booth was captured and shot through the neck, Booth did not die immediately but he suffered because every move caused him pain. He spoke as if he was a hero and he saved the confederacy but all he caused was mourning. He spoke his last words he spoke before death were, "useless, useless". -

Booth's body was taken back to Washington ending the hunt for the president's assassin. The reward was finally paid out nearly a year later. -

Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, George Atzerodt and David Harold were to be hanged the next morning and Edman Spangler, Samuel Arnold, Michael O'laughlen and Samuel Mudd received prison sentences.
