Chapter 7 Timeline

  • Lord Dunmore talks to slaves about defecting

    After so many slaves fought on the American side of the Revolutionary War, the British side began to appeal to slaves. Lord Dunmore was the last royal governor of Virginia and he needed the support. They fought alongside the Loyalists and other British troops.
  • George Washington crosses the Delaware and surprised the English at Trenton

    In December, after months of not doing well, the Continental Army took the English by storm. On Christman Eve in 1776 General Washington led a party across the Delaware River and attacked the British troops.
  • Slavery abolished in Vermont

    A part of the Vermont State Constitution stated that all salves had an age that they are to be freed. The males were freed at 21 and the females at 18.
  • General William Howe captures Philadelphia

    After traveling south from New York the British troops entered Philadephia and took over the city. The Continental Congress fled the town and went to Yorktown. The British troops then laid siege to the city and took it over.
  • France enters the war

    After a winter being trained by a Prussian officer, the American troops were serious war machines and started to win more battles. With this newly trained group, the French realized how serious the Americans were about independence. In December of 1776 France officially recognized America as an independent country.
  • British capture Savannah

    After working their way down the East Coast of America, the British troops entered Georgia (a largely Loyalist colony) and began to take over many cities. Savannah was a very important colonial port that the colonies relied on for importation and exportation.
