~JFK called citizens to be the "new pioneers."
~He proposed many ideas he couldn't get enough votes for such as medical care for aged, to rebuild urban areas, and aid education.
~He also had many bills he did persuade Congress to pass like boosting the economy, rebuilding national defense, providing national aid, and funding massive space programs. -
~Many people believed he couldn't be Catholic and the president.
~People feared that he would involve the Pope too much in country affairs.
~JFK openly explained he would be able to do both. -
~Nixon was an expert on foreign affairs and people expected to see JFK's inexperience show.
~JFK had worked with the television companies however and appeared better than NIxon. -
~JFK's vote into office was one of the closest elections (this would show later as he would have a hard time passing bills because not everyone supported him).
~During his inauguration he gave the famous line, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." -
~The CIA had trained the exiled Cuban residence to go and fight Castro and turn Cuba into a democracy.
~Nothing went right on this day. The airforce wasn't able to knock out the Cuban airforce however they still told the fighters that they had. There was also an elite group of fighters who were supposed to attack Castro who never landed. Those who did land were either killed or taken prisoners. -
~This bus left from Washington D.C. and when going through Alabama was attacked by members of the Ku Klux Klan.
~The inside of the bus was set on fire and the doors held closed to kill the riders. Fortunatly, something scared the members of the Klan and they let go of the doors and the bus riders were able to get off the bus and flee. -
~Khrushchev felt the most effective way to keep the Eastern Germans out of West Berlin was to build a wall.
~This wall consisted of concrete poles and barbed wire on top.
~It was important to keep people in Communist Berlin otherwise the economy would have failed. -
~During the summer of 1962, Castro's ally, Khrushchev, began to ship a steady flow of weapons to Cuba especially increasing nuclear weapons.
~An American plane flew over Cuba taking pictures that showed Cuba's amount of nuclear weapons had increases an some were launched and ready to fire. -
~Even before JFK was president he took an interest in Civil Rights. While he was running for office Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested along with 33 others. Everyone except King was released. JFK personally called Mrs. King to give her his sympathy and his brother, Robert Kennedy, was able to get King released.
~Later as President, Kennedy addressed the nation explaining that discrimination was a prevelent problem that was unfair and needed to be fixed. -
~He and his wife were riding in an open limo through the streets of Dallas when suddenly rifle shots fired and Kennedy was hit in the head.
~He was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald, who was later murdered himself while being transported.
~It is believd his assassination may have been part of a conspiracy.
