  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was written in 1820 by Henry Clay, and dealt with Missouri becoming a slave state and Maine coming into the union as a free state. The Compromise also created the Missouri Compromise line and anything above it was considered a free state. The south and north liked this because it was a way of peace.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    In 1846, David Wilmot from Pennsylvania Created the Wilmot Proviso, This banned slavery in the land acquired from Mexico in the Mexican war. This event cause some tension between the slave and non-slave states.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    Senator Henry Clay introduced a series of resolutions on January 29,1850 to try to avoid any trouble between the north and the south. Congress admitted California as a free state, New Mexico and Utah decided weather slavery was right by popular sovereignty, slave trade was ended in Washington, D.C, congress passed a strict new fugitive slave act, and Texas gave up its claim to New Mexico in return for 10 million dollars.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitive slave act was passed in 1850 by congress,This allowed officials to arrest anyone accused of being a runaway slave. This caused many free blacks to get accused of being a slave and go into slavery in the south. Many slaves who got caught with this fugitive slave act and were punished badly. This impacted the north because there were slave hunters around and sometimes capturing innocent slaves.

    Uncle Tom’s Cabin
    Uncle Tom’s Cabin is a novel created by Harriet Beecher Stowe and the story is about anti-slavery published in 1852. This showed the north what slavery was really like and made them want to up rise.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act / Bleeding Kansas

    Kansas Nebraska Act / Bleeding Kansas
    In 1854, The Kansas Nebraska act allowed People in the territories to decide on slavery using popular sovereignty. This divided the north and the south. Many southerners supported the act and northerners were outraged and thought Douglas betrayed them.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    In 1857 Dred Scott tried to sue for his freedom. Dred argued that he lived in two states where slaves were illegal which meant that he was free. Congress said that he could not sue because he was not a citizen,living in a free state did not mean he was free, and slaves are property protected by the US constitution. This case made slavery right to be practiced everywhere and really affected the north.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debate

    Lincoln Douglas Debate
    Lincoln and Douglas had a series of 7 debates all around the US. Lincoln wanted slavery to end and not expand to western territories and that African Americans deserved full rights. Douglas thought that each state should decide whether they would allow slavery or not and said that lincoln wanted to gain equal equality with African Americans.
  • John Browns raid

    John Browns raid
    In 1859, John Brown raised a group of followers that helped him try to free slaves from the south. They attacked the town of Harper’s Ferry, Virginia. They seized a bunch of guns and planned to start a slave revolt. He said that the bible motivated him and was his excuse for the things he did. Before he was sentenced for murder, he said that the bible instructed him to care for the poor and enslaved. He was guilty of murder and treason and was hung in 1859.
  • Southern Secession

    Southern Secession
    In 1860 a lot of southern states left the union. South Carolina was the first to leave the union and 6 other southern states followed. The south adopted their own constitution and were lead by Jefferson Davis. Lincoln and Davis fought against each other in these wars. The start of the civil war was the fort Sumter battle. This instigated the war.
  • Lincolns election of 1860

    Lincolns election of 1860
    After a lot of debates between Douglas and himself, Lincoln finally won the election of 1860. This made northern republicans happy but southerners were made and felt that they had no political effect. Lincoln won in every free state.
