    Americans with Disabilities Act
    The Americans with Disabilities Act prohibited against discrimination against those who are disabled in the areas of employment, public services, public accommodations, and telecommunications. ADA impacted not only hiring practices, but also mandated employment accommodations be given to these individuals. ADA also mandated accessibility accommodations be provided in private business such as hotels and retail stores.

    Clery Act
    The Clery Act was signed into law in 1990 after the death of Jeanne Clery in 1986. The act required schools to report crime statistics and security policy summaries through an annual security report. Additional amendments have been added over time to strengthen the law.

    The creation of the Internet revolutionized not only the way we do business, but live our everyday lives. There is not a day goes by that we do not access the Internet in some way. Every business/organization, big or small, now has a webpage. Many people have a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram page. This would not have been possible without the creation, and public release, of the Internet.

    This war was the first in the 1990s. It began when Iraq invaded Kuwait. This war allowed us to watch from our televisions like never before. Using the Internet technology, troops were able to communicate with their families.

    Email - The Attachment
    The email attachment was created in 1992 by Nathaniel Borenstein. This creation changed the usage of the email. We can now send documents, pictures, and videos in our email. You no longer had to send something through the mail. You can now simply attach the document and hit send.

    While AOL was created earlier, in 1993 AOL introduced its own email address, Windows version, and access to the rest of the Internet.

    The creation of Amazon changed the way our society shops for all products. Originally Amazon was started as an online bookstore. They began to add other products to their inventory. Amazon has offered a frictionless experience with near immediate results. Customers are now craving the same experience with all online stores and brick-and-mortar stores.

    The passage of NAFTA affected US workers and organizations. It has been under criticism for taking American jobs by allowing companies to move their production to Canada or Mexico.
  • Y2K

    Y2K
    Also known as the millennium bug. When codes were written between 1960-1980, programmers used a two digit field to represent the year. The Y2K bug was the fear that computers would read the date as 1900 instead of 2000. Industries such as banking and transportation which rely on the date could be affected. The best solution was to extend the date to a four digit field. Software companies began sending out Y2K compliant packages. As it turned out, there were very few instances of issues.

    Columbine School Shooting
    Two students opened fire on their classmates at a school in Littleton, Colorado on April 20, 1999. This school shooting had a tremendous impact on school security. After the shooting schools across the country began reviewing their security policies, adding cameras and metal detectors, and banning backpacks. This shooting also changed the way law enforcement reacts to active shooter incidents. They now have methodical strategies for entering an active shooter scene.

    Terrorist activity of the World Trade Center in NYC. As a result, security policies in every aspect of our lives were forever changed. Airport security was taken to an entirely different level. The attack on our country brought us together as one. An appreciation for first responders grew right after the attacks. The Employee Assistance Program made a resurgence. It increased regulations enforced by Customs and Border Protection. It forced businesses to create plans for disasters.

    Facebook has revolutionized the way we connect with all groups of people. It gives businesses new ways to advertise and collect customer feedback and analytical data.
  • Hurricane Katrina

    Hurricane Katrina
    Hurricane Katrina made landfall on August 29 as a category 4 storm in which approximately 1800 people lost their life. The storm demonstrated faults in levees and floodwall built around New Orleans causing catastrophic flooding. Army Corp engineers rebuilt the levee system. This storm brought to light issues of emergency response from federal, state, and local authorities. As a result FEMA was reorganized in 2006.

    The introduction of the iPhone changed every aspect of our everyday lives. It changed the way we consume and use software. How many times have you heard "There's an App for that"? It has allowed our society to be constantly connected. The iPhone changed the way we consume music, television, and movies. Every mobile phone carrier has had to increase their data speeds to keep up with demand. By including a camera, we can now take pictures and video anywhere.

    The Great Recession was brought on mainly related to the housing and banking industries. This caused the Dow to drop. The US Government provided a bailout to the banking industry.
  • Affordable Care Act

    Affordable Care Act
    The Affordable Care Act was signed into law in 2010. This act mandated healthcare for all citizens. Employers are required to offer heath benefits to all employees that work over 30 hours. There are exceptions. This act had an impact on both organizations and individuals.
