  • Shay's Rebellion

    Farmers rebelled against state governments to prevent their farms being forclosed because of state debts.
  • Constitutional Congress

    Delegates meet in Philadelphia to revise the Articles of Confederation. After a lot of debating, they finally threw it out and began drafting the Constitution.
  • Northwest Ordinance of 1787

    Set up process to create 5 new states between Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. In these 5 new territories, slavery was outlawed.

    French Revolution

    The French were fighting a revolution. The two political parties, Federalists and Democratic-Republicans, were divided over whether to support the British (Federalists) or the French who helped us in our War for Independence (Democratic-Republicans). George Washington eventually declared neutrality which was largely ignored by Europe.

    George Washington was the 1st President of the United States. He set the precident for every other president to come, including only serving 2 terms.
  • Whiskey Rebellion

    Farmers were upset over the high tax on whiskey because that was the best way for them to use their grains. George Washington led troops to stop the rebellion and the tax was upheld.

  • XYZ Affair

    In an attempt to create peace with France, President John Adams sent over 3 diplomats to discuss with France. However, France sent them delegates "X, Y, and Z". These delegates refused to discuss peace unless America paid a series of bribes, which they did.

    Quasi War

    A series of Naval battles and skirmishes. Many American trade ships were siezed by France because they believed that we had allied with Britain, despite our declaration of neutrality.
  • Revolution of 1800

    Peaceful change of parties from Federalist (John Adams - 2nd president) to Democratic-Republican (Thomas Jefferson - 3rd president). Jefferson is elected.

    Thomas Jefferson Presidency

    Thomas Jefferson was the 3rd President of the United States. The period 1800-1816 is called the Jeffersonian Era because it was four consecutive terms of Democratic-Republican presidents.
  • Marbury vs. Madison

    Supreme court head justice John Marshall gave the Supreme Court power to declare a law unconstitutional.
  • Louisiana Purchace

    Thomas Jefferson bought the huge expanse of land from the Mississippi to the Rocky Mountains from the French Emperor Napoleon. This was a huge moral conflict for Jefferson because it went against his strict constructionist views, even though it was obviously beneficial for the country.
