-Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated by Gavrillo Princip.
-There was an attempted assassination by bomb, and when it failed, Princip shot Ferdinand and his wife, killing them both. -
Austria-Hungary Declares War on Serbia
-This was the war that began World War I
-1 month after Archduke Ferdinand was assasinated, this war was declared. Ferdinand was the heir to the Austrian-Hungary thron, nad he was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist. -
Germany Invaded Belgium
-Germany invaded Belgium to get to France and try to take Paris.
-Belgium was a neutral country. Germnay only invaded to get to France. -
A German U-Boat Sinks the Lusitania
-Germans launched a torpedo at the Lusitania, causing it to sink
-People suspect that the Germans launched a second torpedo, since there were 2 explosions. The Germans claim they only launched one. The second explosion is what caused the boat to sink. -
The First Battle of the Somme Begins
-Battle took place on either side of the Somme River in France.
-The Battle was fought between the British Empire, France, and the German Empire. -
The Zimmerman Note is Discovered
-The Zimmerman Note was a telegram sent by Aurthur Zimmerman to a German minister of Mexico.
-The Telegram stated that if Mexico joined the war, they could get some land from the United States -
The United States Declares War on Germany
-On April 2, President Wilson asked Congress to draw up a declaration of war to place against Germany.
-Wilson also had to deal with the Zimmerman Note, and though he tried to handle it privately, it had become public and on April 6, Congress had approved Wislon's request and war was declared on Germany
