Causes of the Revolutionary War [Chance Jones, Tostenson 7th hour]

  • French and Indian War ends

    Put the British into debt, who raised taxes on the colonies without their consent and and angered them.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    The King ordered that the Colonists could not buy land or go past the Appalachian Mountains, as to keep a closer eye on them and keep them in check.
  • Sugar Act

    The British raised taxes on coffee, textiles, sugar, molasses and wine.
  • Stamp Act

    Required all documents to be printed on stamped paper which was more expensive and more heavily taxed than normal paper
  • Quartering Act of 1765

    Required Colonists to house British troops without Colonist consent or ability to refuse, could be punished by the British if they refused to house the troops.
  • Sons of Liberty Formed

    The main group of rebels opposing the British, led by Samuel Adams and John Hancock out of Boston. (Used July 1 as a date to place it in correct position)
  • Townshend Acts

    Taxes placed on Tea, glass, lead, paper, and paints to continue to pay the debts of the French and Indian war that the Colonists were being taxed for without reason.
  • Townshend acts repealed

    Parliament removed the taxes on all goods from the Townshend Acts, but kept the tax on Tea, which was the colonists favorite thing, and the taxes caused tension and uprise.
  • Boston Massacre

    British troops fire on a colonist protest killing 5 Colonists, sparking outrage and protests by the colonists.
  • Tea Act passed

    Only the British owned East India companies could sell tea; merchants were no longer allowed to sell tea and the tax was very high, which upset the colonists even further.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Sons of Liberty members dressed as Native Americans threw 342 chests of tea overboard so that they were not sold. The King punished the entire town of Boston by shutting down the ports and harbors.
  • Continental Congress

    12 of the 13 colonies met to petition the repeal of the Intolerable acts to send to King George III, who declared the colonies in open rebellion.
  • Intolerable Acts

    The King wanted to punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party, which took control of the colony's governments, and governors were selected by the British Parliament, harbors were closed.
