The Second Great Awakening was when religious revivals would be held over the US, popularizing religion. There were much more people participating in religion. There were also reforms such as temperance movement. -
Creation of Cotton Gin
The cotton gin was a small machine designed to clear cotton easier. The cotton gin was a big increase on slavery. It boosted the production of cotton, which more slaves were needed to pick. -
Louisiana Purchase
Thomas Jefferson used government money to buy land from France. This was considered unconstitutional because it was not listed that he was allowed to do that. -
Missouri Compromise
There was a line n the middle of the US to separate free and slave states from being established. The problem was that when California had the gold rush, thousands flocked in search of gold. California then became a state, which caused issues for if they were a slave or free state. -

Started in the north, popularizing factories and new mechanical inventions. It sped up the process of making textiles, creating more jobs in the process. Spreading to the west. -

Nat Turner’s Rebellion
A slave named Nat Turner led one of the largest slave rebellions, killing many plantation owners and their families. Freeing black slaves. This made plantation owners paranoid, increasing the harshness of how they treat slaves. -

It was a conflict between South Carolina and Andrew Jackson about paying a high tariff. This almost caused South Carolina to succeed from the United States. And angering them in the process. -

Mexican American War
A war broke out between the US and Mexico over the US annexing Texas and area. The US gained thousands of miles of new land, but also increasing tension between US and Mexico. -
California Gold Rush
Large amounts of golf were found in California, thousands flocked in search to be rich. The amount of people that were migrating made California eligible to be a state. This made the south mad because it wasnt a slave state, shifting the balance. -
Compromise of 1850
It allowed California to be a free state, and allowed all future states to vote on which. Allowed new states to choose their stance on slavery. But the compromise was unable to please both groups, increasing tension. -
Frederick Douglass July 4th Speech
Frederick Douglass have his speech about how 4th of July meant nothing to black people and slaves, because they were not free. He used his public status to influence abolition. He gave a speech how July 4th doesnt mean anything to a lot of americans. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
It was an act that made laws on new states having slavery. The mason Dixon line allowed any states south of the lines to have slaves. It would cause conflict with California. -

Dred Scott v Sanford
Dred Scott was a slave that was currently living in a free state, he sued for his freedom because he was a resident in a free state. The court ruled that Dred Scott didnt have the right to sue since slaves were not considered citizens and therefor couldnt sue anyone. -
Attack on Charles Sumner
A pro slavery senator used a cane to beat Charles Sumner. Both sides of the senate would go on to hate each-other. They started carrying weapons into the chambers. -

Raid on Harpers Ferry
John Brown attempted to start a slave uprising after storming and armory. It only lasted 2 days and all people involved were stopped. This would then lead to states making bigger militias in worry of this happening again. -
Election on 1860
Lincoln was elected president, which wasn't a very popular vote. Lincoln was working to limit slavery. But ended up abolishing it after the Civil War. The south was not a very big fan of lincoln. -

The south threatened to succeed from the union. Showed that both halfs didnt get along. The beliefs between the north and south were way to different. -

Shots fired at Ft. Sumter
This was the official start of fighting in the American Civil War. Union troops stationed at Ft. Sumter in South Carolina were attacked bu the South Carolina militia. Union troops lost and surrendered the fort to the Confederate militia. Unlike previous acts of violence, this was the first time violence broke out between organized military troops. Fighting in the Civil War would continue for 4 more years after this event. -
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin
It was a book that was written to show the horrors of slavery. It put a more public eye on the torture of slavery. Persuading many opinions on it.
