  • Invention of the Cottin Gin

    Invention of the Cottin Gin
    Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1793. The cotton gin sped up the process of removing seeds from the cotton. The cotton gin helped so much that it became Americas leading export by the 19th century. Although the cotton gin was such a success, it justified farmers to have more slaves.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri compromise was created by Henry Clay in 1820. The compromise made Missouri a slave state, and Maine a free state. The compromise also drew a line from the southwestern corner of Missouri to the western boundary. States south of the line would be slave states, and states north of the line would be free.

    The underground Railroad

    The underground railroad was made to help enslaves Africans escape to freedom. Northern Abolitionists and free Africans helped free the enslaves. These people had to be very careful not to be caught.

    Tariff of 1828 & Nullification Crisis

    On May 19,1828 a tariff was created in order to protect the industry in the United States. However, in 1832 their was a meeting held because of the tariffs that were being created, and they were unfair to the southern states and effected their possible political future, which was known as the Nullification Crisis. On February 1, 1833 it was decided that the tariffs that were created would lead to the succession of the states.

    The Kansas Nebraska Act allowed people that lived in Nebraska and Kansas to decide whether or not they wanted slavery in their states.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    In 1846, David Wilmot proposed the Wilmot Proviso.(http://www.history.com/topics/wilmot-proviso) The Wimot Proviso stated that slavery would not be in any of the states acquired in the Mexican war. The senate did not pass the law

    The Compromise of 1850 created a sense of balance within the slave states and free states, and also ended the slave trade. It also allowed different states such as: Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada, to decide whether or not they wanted to be slave states.

    'Bleeding Kansas' was a series of violent acts between those that did and did not agree with slavery. It took place in Kansas and border towns such as Missouri, this event was also known as the "Border War."
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott vs. Sanford was a decision that said slaves not being able to be citizens of the United States was unfair, the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional, and that Congress does not have the right to prohibit slavery in states. In the end Dred Scotts decision was passed onto the 13 and 14th amendments of the U.S. Constitution.

These men were Abraham Lincoln, Stephan Douglas, John Bell, and John Beckinridge. Each man had very different views on slavery. When the votes came in, Lincoln won with 40% of the popular vote.

    The secession of the southern states lasted all through out the Civil War. The secession of southern states was ending slavery in the south, which was the main purpose of the civil war.
  • Lincoln-Douglas debates

    Lincoln-Douglas debates
    In 1858, Abraham Lincoln and Stephan Douglas went head-to-head in 7 debates throughout Illinois. Lincoln and Douglas were fighting for a spot in the senate. The debates brought thousands of people all throughout the nation. In the end Douglas won the election, but this was not all bad for Lincoln. The debates won Lincoln a large following that would help him in the future.
