This novel was one of the major factors of the Civil War because it showed the unfair treatment that slaves were recieving, and since it was a bestselling novel, many Americans learned about the real deal of slavery. This book demonstrated the U.S. as two separate pieces put into one; sectionalism.

The Democrats became a party mostly supported by the Southerners. This contributed to the Civil War because it demonstrated sectionalism, which demonstrated different ideas.

    Dredd Scott, an enslaved Aftican American lived in a slavery-free territory along with his master. They left the state. Scott thought that since he had been in a free teritory, then he had the right to become a free person against the Supreme Court. The judge, Roger Taney, said that since he was an object, he had no right to make a lawsuit since he was a slave, and he was not a citizen. This made the South mad since they realized that slavery wasn't going to be easy to beat.

This contributed to the Civil War because when Lincoln won, many southern states thought of seceding from the Union in order to preserve slavery.
