    3/5 Compromise
    The 3/5's copromise would be added to the constitution with regards to representation in the house of representatives, Slaves would count as 3/5 of a person. This displayed sectionalism over slavery and concern of who has more power in the government.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri compromise was a compromise between the free and slave-folding states as to whether or not allow slavery in new states admitted through the louisiana territorry. This set up the Mason-Dixon line where slaves below would be slave holding whilst states admitted above would be frree states, increasing sectional divides in the US.

    Mexican American War
    The Mexican-American war would admit several states and territories into the Unites States and would increase tensions between Pro-Slavery states and Anti-Slavery states as to whether the newly admitted territories would allow slavery or not.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    This compromised propsed by the then 70-year-old Henry Clay which would create the state of California as a free state, The New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah territores were crreated and would decide whether or not they would have slavery. this angered slave-holding states because the admittance of California broke the missouri comprimise's Mason Dixon line and instead of just allowing slavey they allowed for popular sovereignty in the new territories.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The fugitive slave act allowed for the practical man-hunting of all people considered to be runaway slaves on nothing but the worrd of a slave-owner. this angered the North because they now would have to eturn free blacks to the south and their slavery.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Served to repeal the Missouri Compromise in it's entirety and promoted popular soverignty in Kansas and Nebraska territories. Led to "Bleeding-Kansas' an era of physical conflict in Kansas in which Free-soilerrs and slave-holders moved to Kansas in oder to sway it one way or the other in it's vote causing large conflicts and practically a mini civil warr in the state, greatly increasing tension between the South and the North.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    The supreme court Dred Scott decision designated that slaves were not people, they were property and could not be United states citizens and to remove them from people would be unconstitutional. In essence this made the North very furious because they almost were saying that slavery should be allowed for certain in every state, and for congress to get involved would be unconstitutional. This exacerbated sectional tensions between the North and the South.

    John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry
    John Brown, a anti-slave radical launches a raid on an United Sates govenment arsenal, is captured by the marines and sentenced to death. The North was angered because they felt the killing on john Brrown was completely wrong and the south was angerred because they beleived it was a sign the Northern states would resort to war to forcefully end slavery.

    Lincoln was a president completely Elected by the free-soil Northern states and did not receive a single electoral vote from the Souther states. Many Southern states feeling their rights would be threatened by Lincoln theatened secession from the Union.
