    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was a bill that was passed in 1820 that entailed Missouri being added to the Union as a slave state and Maine being a free state. It also included that a certain part of the Lousiana Territory would be free and another part would not be free.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitive Slave Act was an act passed in 1850. The act made it llegal for slave owners to come and bring their escaped slaves back to the south. This put many free slaves in danger and many ran to Canada for safety.
  • Uncle Tom"s Cabin (1)

    Uncle Tom"s Cabin (1)
    Uncle Tom's Cabin was written and published in 1852 by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The book was about a slave named Tome who was sold by his owner and goes through the life of a slave and in the end is killed. This story had a big impact on abolitionist and created new ones. It is also believed to be one of the imporant causes to the Civil War.

    Bleeding Kansas
    When Kansas was added as a state there had to be a vote to determine whether the state was going to be free or not becuase of the Kansa- Nebraska Act and popular soviernty. To make it a slave state pro-slavery people came and acted like residents of Kansas in order to vote. The people who lived in Kansas and people from other anti- slavery people discovered this and decided to do something about it. That's when the fighting started. In 1861 Kansas was added into the Union as a free state.

    Dred Scott Decision
    After Dred Scott's owner, John Emerson, died in 1843 Dred offered to buy his family's freedom. When his offer was refused he filed a law suit against Ms. Emerson for his freedom. During the time that the case was on trial it was discovered that all of the Emerson property was to go to John Emerson's brother- in law. The case was then moved to the Supreme court where the verdict was that slaves had no right to freedom or citizenship, so the Scott family was forced back into slavery.
  • Harper's Ferry

    Harper's Ferry
    Harper's Ferry is the place where white abolitionist, John Brown, attacked in order to gain weapons for his plans for a slave rebellion. The attack was stoped by Robert E. Lee and the U.S. Marines before John Brown could accomplish what he wanted. John Brown was taken prisoner with seven other men and eventually they were all hanged.

    Abraham Lincoln Elected President (2)
    The election of 1860 was between Abraham Lincoln, Stephan A. Gouglas, Jogn C. Breckenridge, and John Bell. The elections were held October 6, 1860. Abraham Lincoln did not win by overall votes but by electoral votes. After Lincoln's victory he was inaugerated March 4, 1861.
