The Missouri Compromise
This compromise was a debate was wether if the slaves would be allowed in the state or not. This was when the 36' 30'' line was drawn, this was to tell wether a slave was allowed in a certain territory or not. -
Compromise of 1850
This was yet another compromise for slavery, this time it had included five new additions. Now California had entered as a free state, The slavery issue in Utah and New Mexico had been decided by Popular Sovereignty, Slave trade in the capital had ended, it settled border problems between New Mexico and Utah, and finally had made a strict law called the Fugitive Slave law. -
Fugitive Slave Law
This law was designed for the slaves who ran away from their slave owners. They had made the citizens go out of their way to return the slaves. If the citizens did not comply they were able to face a jail sentence or $1,000 fine. This did not sit well with people who had lived in the north since they had hated the law. This also caused many free slaves to be sent back into slavery. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
This was a hit novel created by Harriett Beecher Stowe, this was written to show the cruelty and evils that slavery had done. This story's point of view was of a older slave who had been whipped to death by his slave owner. Northerners had began to change their views, however the south condemned the book that it was full of lies. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This act was Kansas and Nebraska dividing into two separate states. They decided that Slavery was going to be up towards the people. This however, led to violence breaking out within the senate, there were a lot of pro and anti slavery territories in one area. This led to even more conflicts and the Northerners believed that this broke the Missouri Compromise. -
Pottowatomi Creek Killings
Since the violence had began to break out in Kansas, five people had decided to take the laws into their own hands. John Brown and the four sons had rode into a small town had named and pulled five men that were pro-slavery out of bed and murdered them. Claiming that God had told him to do this, this left many Northerners surprised. -
Dred Scott Decision
This was a case by a man who was called Dred Scott, he was a slave. However he had lived in a free territorial state with his slave owner. Though as time ticked his owner had died, Scott had a attorney in need of a law suit for him. It had went over towards the Supreme Court, though it had stated slavery could not be banned in any state. This had resulted in favor of the Southerners, and had upset and angered the Northerners. -
Lincoln-Douglass Debate
This was a debate between Abraham Lincoln and President Douglass. Douglass had wanted popular sovereignty, however Abraham Lincoln had wanted slavery to not be allowed anywhere. He had believed that slavery was a big topic that wouldn't go away and that it would continue to hurt and rip apart the Union. -
Raid on Harper's Ferry
This was another attack by John Brown that he had constructed, he led five black and thirteen whites onto the Ferry. They planned to start a Slave revolt, however no slaves stood up and a number of his men died and he was arrested and executed. -
Election of 1860
Abraham Lincoln had ran against Douglass within the election. However Lincoln had not been on the ballets of the southerners votes. But this did not stop Abraham from winning the election. The south was so upset they decided to begin to talk about seceding from the union.
