Causes of the Civil War

  • Northwest Ordinance

    The Northwest Ordinance was adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 13, 1787. IT is important because it provided more land for America.
  • U.S Constitution - 3/5th Compromise

    The Three- Fifths Compromise is when out of every five slaves, three would be counted towards representation in Congress.This is important because it changed the way people thought about slave trade.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    The Fugitive Slave Act where federal laws were allowed to return slaves that escaped to their owners. This was important because slaves got more and more "popular".
  • Invention of the Cotton Gin

    Invention of the Cotton Gin
    The Cotton Gin is something that helps take the cotton seeds out of cotton. This was an important invention because before the cotton gin people used slaves to pick on the cotton seeds, but when the cotton gin was made there wasn't really a use then for slaves.
  • Ban on Slave Importance

    The Ban on Slave Importance is a federal law that states that new slaves can't be transported into the United States. This is an important event because they might've ran out of slaves if some of them didn't have kids.
  • Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise was when another state, Maine wanted to enter as a slave state but the balance between slave and free states was already even. So then Maine entered as a free state and Missouri entered as a slave state, to even it out. Also, in the Missouri Compromise they made a line. And any state above this line was a free state and any state below the line was a slave state. This was important because it changed the way people and states kept slaves.

    Nat Turner was a slave who led his followers to Richmond, Virginia to try and capture a armory. This was important because it later led to more restrictive slave laws.
  • South Carolina Nullification Crisis

    South Carolina threatened to leave the Union if he Government didn't recognize the nullification. This was important because this then this lead to the Force Bill, which was when Jackson threatened to send 50,000 troops to South Carolina for them to enforce the law.
  • Organization of the Underground Railroad

    The Underground Railroad was a series of routes that were used for slaves to escape to free land. Slave owners in the South knew a little about there routes but they didn't really know where they were and who the people were who organized it. This was important because it helped slaves escape, but it also angered slave owners.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    David Wilmot proposed a law to ban slavery in all and areas that the United States had. But this law never got passed. This was important because it never got passed.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was a document that ended the Mexican- American War. It also gave the United States land like California, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and more. This was important because we go to gain more land which helped us discover new things.
  • Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850 states 5 things that happen and they were that California was entered as a free state, the Fugitive Slave Law, Washington D.C banned slave trade, and two more. This was important because each side had at least two victories from this,which evened things out for a little bit.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book written by Harriet Stowe. In this book it talked about slavery, and how bad it was. This book was important because since is was like the top selling book, it was the main reasons why the Civil War started.
  • Kansas- Nebraska Act

    The Kansas- Nebraska Act was when states could have their people decided and vote if they want slavery in that state or not. This act was important because it meant that there could eventually be a lot slave states.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas was when there was a discussion and a debate about whether Kansas should be a free or a slave state. This was important because it was a mini Civil War before the Civil War even started. It was like a mini Civil War because the people against slavery and the people for it when fighting over the land.
  • Charles Sumner Attacked

    Charles Sumner Attacked
    The Charles Sumner Attacked is also known as the Bleeding Sumner. The Bleeding Sumner was when Charles Sumner, a congressman was attacked and beaten up with a cane by a southerner. This was important because it was the start of Northerners and Southerners fighting.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    The Dred Scott Decision was when a slave went to slave his owner because his owner moved into a free state, so then he should've been free. But when he went to court the Supreme Court told him he wasn't allowed to sue barbecue he was considered property. This is important because there were now slaves in the Northern states that were supposed to be considered free states.
  • John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry

    John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry was when John Brown raided an armory to start a slave rebellion. This was important because even though some people consider him a terrorist, he was the one who started rebelling against slavery.
  • Lincoln's Election

    In November of 1860 Abraham Lincoln was running for president. His platform was that slavery must not be allowed in new territories. He then won this election. This was important because when he got elected South Carolina decided to leave the Union.
  • South Carolina Secedes from Union

    South Carolina left the Union because Abraham Lincoln got elected president, but he didn't get get votes from Southerners. This is important because it led to the Civil War, other states left the Union, which then formed the Confederate States of America
