    Causes of the Civil War

  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
Missouri was a new state, pro-slavery and anti-slavery states were debating over whether or not Missouri would be a slave state or a free state. Missouri wanted to join as a slave state so they joined as a slave state, Maine joined as a free state to even it out. It would have caused tension because the south wanted more slave states, while the north wanted more free states.
  • Free Soil Party

    Free Soil Party
It was a political party that was active in the1848 and 1852 presidential elections. Its main purpose was to oppose the expansion of slavery into western territories, and sometimes worked against laws that discriminated blacks. This would have been a highly hated group in the south because the free soil party was against slavery. This just gave the south more reasons for war and gave the north more to fight for.
  • Compromise of 1850

This annoyed the balance between the South and the North because California, which had taken forever to get finally joined the union as a free state. It also contained 5 separate bills, this is also when the Slave Act came into play, slave trade was also banned in Washington DC.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

It was an Act that had been passed to capture slaves that had tried to runaway into the North. Though the South had strongly enforced this law, not many Northern states cared to really enforce the bill.
  • Uncle Toms Cabin

    Uncle Toms Cabin
Now I know this was just a novel but it strongly voiced those who were against slavery. This novel sold over 300,000 copies, while this fueled abolitionists causes the South had taken it as an attack
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
This was also known as the “border war”, it was a fight over whether or not Kansas should have joined the union as a free state or a slave state. Fight kinda says it all but it just irritated both sides but not only was this going on but many other things were going on.
  • Kansas and Nebraska Act

This Act split up the party between southern pro-slavery whigs and the southern anti-slavery whigs. It made a line to split up the north and the south, the north wanted to ignore the law just like the Compromise of 1850, they were even violating other laws.
  • Reveal Missouri Compromise

This spilt apart the country between pro-slavery and anti-slavery states. It would determine whether a new state would be a slave state or a free state, it limited where the South could expand to.
  • Abraham Lincoln Election

    Abraham Lincoln Election
(1860) Abraham Lincoln Election- When Abraham Lincoln got elected a lot of things took a turn for the best, he passed the 13th amendment, which ended slavery and he passed the Emancipation Proclamation. But that wasn’t done with ease, I feel that him ending slavery started a up rise of angry southerners just pushing towards the Civil War.
