Causes of the Civil War

  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Who: Henry Clay, a congressman, in 1820. Missouri was going to be added as a slave state but this would bring and unbalance in the slave and free states, upsetting many. This Missouri Compromise was made to create a balance in the states.
    Why: Missouri wanted to join the union as a slave state, but this would create and unbalance. Other details: Missouri was the only exception on the ruling set for the Missouri Compromise.
  • Wilmot Provisio

    Wilmot Provisio
    Who: David Wilmot, a congressman. What: This document was for the Mexican Cession Terrioty. It was deciding wether or not there would be slavery in the area. The document passed in the House of Representatives but did not pass in the Senate.
    Why: They didn't want to bring and unbalance or create and upset in the states. It was wether or not the territory would become a free or slave state. Many didn't want this because of the expanding of slavery.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    Who: Slave Helpers, in 1850. In the south, they made it illegal to help slaves escape their plantations. Those who helped were to be arrested and if a free slave was caught he would be taken back to the Slave state.
    Why: They were losing slaves, which were property and the believed they had no right to be free. Slaves were also being helped to escape and they didn't like that.

    Compromise of 1850
    Henry Clay, in 1850. California, Utah, and New Mexico. California was to be added as a free state, the Mexican Cession Territory was split into Itah and New Mexico. Why: The issue was the unbalance of Slave and free states because many people wanted it to be a slave state and it would creat and unbalance.
  • Kansas- Nebraska Act

    Kansas- Nebraska Act
    Who: Stepehen Douglas who is a senator. In 1854, Kansas and Nebraska use popular sovereignty to change slavery. This act pleased southerns but angered the north because it repealed the Missouri Comoromise.
    Why: They wanted slavery to spread but the North didn't, it was violating the Missouri Compromise and created an unbalance. Thus outraged many and led to Bleeding Kansas.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    Who: John Brown, Anti-slavery supporters. In 1854, the popular sovereignty caused a small civil war. It was between slavery and anti-slavery supporters. John Brown, an anti-slavery supporter led one of the bloodiest riots to end slavery.
    Why: they wanted to end slavery once and for all, John Brown created a major impact of the states.
  • Dred Scott versus Stanford

    Dred Scott versus Stanford
    Who: Dred Scott, he was a slave in 1857. He moved with his slave owner to a free state but shortly after his owner died. Scott then sued for his freedom. He be levied that he was a citizen and deserved freedom. The court thought otherwise.
    Why: They said he was property and not a citizen and even though he was in a free state, he was able to go back to working.
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    Lincoln-Douglas Debates
    Who: Lincoln and Douglas. In 1858, Doug,as sued for saying that Lincoln was going to try to make the whole United States a free country. A lot of tension grew and many got mad over the fact that he might.
    Why:
    Douglas did this to make competition.
