Missouri Compromise
Missouri and Maine both applied for statehood in 1820 and in order to maintain balance between the north and south, they make Maine a free state and Missouri as a slave state. They also created a boundary line across the Lousiana purchase, north of the line slavery was banned and south of the line, slavery was allowed. -
Nullification Crisis
The US congress passed the tariff of 1828 in order to increase the price of goods imported, forcing the south to buy goods from the north. Southerners felt that this wasn't fair and nullified, and did not follow federal law. -
Compromise of 1850
When California applied to be a state, the balance was once again threatened. So in order to maintain the balance, California entered the Union as a free state. They also allowed popular sovereignty in the Utah and New Mexico territories.The slave trade was banned in D.C because who wants their nation's capital to have slaves? The strict slave laws were also put into affect. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Stephan-Douglas was to split the rest of the Lousiana purchase into 2 territories, Kansas and Nebraska. As a result, many slave ownders from missouri and other slave states crossed into Kansas to vote illegally. Pro-Slavery and anti-slavery clash to what is now known as "Bleeding Kansas." -
Dred Scott Case
A slave from Missouri traveled with his owner to Illinois, which is a free state. in 1846 he sued for his freedom, claiming that living in Illinois for a certain period of time made him a free man. The court ruled that Blacks were not citizens and could not sue in court and that Scott was someones property and could not be free. -
Election of 1860
In the election of 1860, Democrat John Breckinridge ran against Republican Abraham Lincoln. Mainly southern states voted for Breckinridge and Northern states voted for lincoln.
