  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was written to "fix" the senators' power inbalances . When Missiouri came in as a slave state, Maine had to switch to a free state to even the power out. They used Missouri's southern border as a line to divide the South and North.
  • Nullifcation

    Nullifcation
    The term " Nullifcation " means to cancel, ignore, or to make invalid. All of which the South did when the North tried to place tariffs on imported goods. This made the South mad since most of the stuff they bought were imported form Europe for cheaper prices than the North.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850
    This was another attempt to keep together the North and South. This allowed California to enter the Union as a state in exchange for the Fugitive Slave Act to be passed.The fugitive slave act required the North to send back any runaway slaves to the South. This was encouraged by Georgia and Alexander Stephens (a man who wanted to stay in a the Union)
  • Kanas-Nebraska Act

    Kanas-Nebraska Act
    Territories of Kanas and Nebraska were fighting over whether or not they should be slave state. The territories were told they could choose, however when they finally decided to become a Slave State they were denied by the North. This insured the South that the North wouldn't support them, causing anger towards them.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    Dred Scott was a slave who tried to sue for his freedom, however lost the case because the Supreme Court proclaimed that he had no right and was " property " . Dred Scott was sure he would win since his owner had traveled into a free state with him.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    This election made Abraham Lincoln president with out no say so from the South. Georgia was furious along with the rest of southern states, causing Georgia to choose whether or not to secede from the North and forming a new nation with the southern states. Alexander S. argued against seceding but had no chance to change the minds' of people . Georgia finally broke away in December of 1860 forming the Confederate states.
