Causes of the Civil War

    The 3/5 Compromise was added to the Constitution to determine representation in the House of Representatives, slaves equaled 3/5 of a person. This shows sectionalism over slavery and the concern of which side has power in the government.

    The Missouri Compromise was when Missouri would become a slave state and Maine would be a free state. When Missouri applied for statehood, it upset the balance between free and slave states. This led to the Civil War because, it had a short term fix.

    The Nullification Crisis was the conflict between South Carolina and the federal government over tarrifs. South Carolina wanted states-rights to be more powerful than the federal governement. This lead to the CIvil War because it brought up the problems of states-rights, which led to the idea of secession which further led to the Civil War.

    The Manifest Destiny was the belief that the United States should own all territories between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This lead to a growing rift between North and South, which eventually lead to the Civil War.

    The Mexican American War was when the United States resulted in Mexico's defeat and the loss of around half of its national territory in the North.This lead to the Civil War because, Mexico refused to let the US purchase Texas.

    Popular Sovereignty is the belief that the people living in a particular area should have the right to choose how their government is run. The North disagreed and the South wasn't allowed to vote anything through congress because of the disagreement. The South seceeded and this led to the Civil War.

    The Compromise of 1850 was when the United States had set up new territory from Mexico and it was debated whether slavery should or should not be allowed. This led to the Civil War because it ended slave trade in Washington D.C. which they did not want to happen.

    The Fugitive Slave Act was when the law enforcement officers were to arrest a slave who happened to be running away. Any person providing or aiding a runaway slave would be subjected to a six month imprisonment and will receive a $1000 fine. This led to the Civil War because, It actually ended up worsening solving the problem of slavery.

    The Kansas Nebraska Act let people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. This led to the Civil War because until the area was organized as a territory, settlers would not move there because they could not legally hold a claim on the land.

    The Dred Scott vs Sandford case was about Dred Scott being a slave who wanted to be free. He wasn’t able to be free because he wasn’t considered to be a United States citizen. This led to the Civil War because, It didn’t help solve slavery issues but it did trigger the North to think it was offensive.
