    Wilmot Proviso
    The Wilmot Proviso was a plan created by David Wilmot. It was created to stop the spread of slavery into Mexican territories. This plan passed the House of Representitives but failed the Senate.

    The Free Soil Party was a political party created in Buffalo, New York. It was made up of Northerners and they created the party to discuss slavery.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    It was a compromise consisting of five parts. The five parts were that California entered as a free state, the area from Mexican Cession would be divided into Utah and New Mexico and the slavery issue was to be decided by popular sovereigntry, Washington D.C. ended it's slave trade, they created a fugitive slave law, and settled the border problems between Texas and New Mexico.

    Fugitive Slave Law
    This law was part of the compromise of 1850. This law required any citizen to catch runaway slaves. If a citizen didn't comply they could be sent to jail for six months or be fined up to $1,000. Because of this law, many blacks were captured and sent back into slavery.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a novel written by Harriett Beecher Stowe. The book contained all the evils of slavery. This made Northerners change their views of slavery.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    This act divided Kansas and Nebraska into territories. It was decided that popular sovereignty would decide whether these states would be slave states or not. The pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers rushed to this area which led to conflict.
  • Pottowatomi Creek Killings

    John Brown, along with his four sons, took the law into their own hands. The pulled five pro-slavery men from Pottowatomi Creek out of their beds in the middle of the night and killed them. John Brown said what he did what God told him to do. The northerners who opposed slavery were still appalled at what he did.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott was a slave that was living in a free territory with his owner. His owner moved back to a slave state but dies while there. Scott hired attorneys to file a law suit for him which went to supreme court. Dred Scott lost because the court ruled he was property not a citizen so he couldn't file a lawsuit. Congress also ruled that they could not ban slavery in any territories and this repealed the Missouri Compromise.
