Causes of the civil war

  • 3/5th Compromise

    3/5th of all slaves counted towards population. This furthered the slavery issue, while helping out slave-owning states during elections.
  • Northwest Ordinance

    America wanted to adopt around 3-5 more states form the northwest area. This gave them more states to work with for elections.
  • Fugitive slave Act

    Slaves who escaped must be forced back to work. This pushed slavery, and it became a bigger issue in the states.
  • Invention of Cotton Gin

    Invention of Cotton Gin
    The cotton gin quickly picked seeds out of cotton. This made it much easier for salves to work,which made for more slaves to be in use.
  • Ban on slave importation

    This meant that slaves could not enter the U.S. So slavery was one step closer to ending.
  • Missouri Compromise

    This set up a line, 36, 30 north. If the state was below the line it was a slave state, if it was above, it was a free state. This made slavery slightly less, considering states couldn't choose.
  • Nat Turner Rebellion

    Nat Turner Rebellion
    Slaves outbreak and killed around 55 people while trying to escape. This brought Slaves closer to being free.
  • South Carolina Nullification Crisis

    South Carolina wanted to Nullify the Tariff, and they threatened to leave the union if it wasn't nullified. It was then nullified, but not before troops were threatened to be sent, this brought the north and south closer to war.
  • Organization of underground railroad.

    The underground railroad was organized by Harriet Tubman, and was an escape route for slaves. This helped bring Slaves closer to escaping, and brought the civil war closer.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    There was a proposal to ban slavery in the territories gained from Mexico, but it failed every time. This furthered the slavery issue, and brought us closer and closer to war.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    The treaty gave us more territory on the Mexican Border. This gave us more territory for the slavery debate, which brought southerners closer to succession.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Slave trade in Washington D.C was abolished, and The fugitive slave act was amended. This brought war even closer by limiting slavery slightly.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin published.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin published.
    A book was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe about the issue of slavery. This made Southerners angry, and more northerners believed slavery was wrong.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    An act that allowed citizens in Kansas and Nebraska to decide if Slavery should be allowed in the states. This continued the slave issue, south wanted it, north didn't
  • Bleeding Kansas

    John Brown entered a pro slavery town in Kansas, and killed five men in front of their families. This got everyone talking about slavery, which caused more up rise.
  • Charles Sumner attacked

    Charles Sumner attacked
    Charles Sumner was beaten to near-death with a cane. This of course caused people to continue talk about slavery, as Sumner was anti-slave
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was a slave who took his owner to court because his owner took him to a free state and tried to enslave him. The court ruled that Slaves are property and must still be property if taken to a free state. This meant that congress could not ban slavery, which caused an uproar in abolitionists.

    John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry
    John Brown planned to help slaves escape by going in and arming them, his plan failed and he was convicted on treason and hung. This caused uproar, as some thought he was a terrorist, and some thought he was a hero.

    In November Abraham Lincoln was elected as president which caused uproar in the south, as not a single southerner voted for him. This angered the south and conflicted them with the North
  • South Carolina secedes from the union

    South Carolina broke away from America in December, a lot of the south followed them, making the Confederate States of America. This was the start of the civil war
