Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was the compromise that admitted Missouri and Maine into the Union. When Missouri first applied to the Union they were denied because It would mess up the balance between free and slave states but were accepted in 1819 when they reapplied. -
Wilmot Prosivo
The Wilmot Prosivo was an amendment that said all new territory gained from the Mexican-American war would become free states. This upset the southerners because it would upset the balance between free and slave states in the direction of the free states. This impacted history because it created a lot of conflict between the north and the south. -
Compromise of 1850
The compromise of 1850 admitted California into the Union as a free state and let New Mexico and Utah decide. It also made it easier for slave owners to recover runaway slaves. This compromise was put in place by Henry Clay and was made in order to avoid a civil war between the north and the south. -

The fugitive slave act was an act that said government officials could accuse any African of being an escaped slave and be sent to the south without trial. This impacted history because it is the worst decision the supreme court ever made. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book about the life of an enslaved person by Harriet Beecher Stowe and highlighted just how bad slavery really is. The book was really popular and sold over 300,000 copies. The book changed people's opinion on slavery and was turning heads. The southerners didn't like this and it angered them. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
The idea that being a free or slave state through popular sovereignty was very controversial and eventually lead to fighting in Kansas trying to change the decision this became known as Bleeding Kansas. -
Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott was a slave that moved to Missouri to become a free man but when he went to court for his freedom he was denied because the constitution said that a slave is not a citizen therefore he could not sue. -
Lincoln Douglas Debate
The Lincoln Douglas debate was a debate for senator with Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. Stephen believed that states should be able to choose if they want to be a free or slave state while Lincoln believed that slavery is wrong and it should be banned altogether. -
John Brown's Raid
John Brown's Raid was a raid on an armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. John Brown was born in 1800 and was a Radical Abolitionist. The raid included an army of 22 men with three being John's sons. They had rented a nearby farm in Maryland to prepare prior to the attack. -
Lincoln's Election of 1860
Lincon's election was the election that put Lincoln in office from 1861 to his assassination in 1865. When Lincoln got elected the southerners thought that because Lincoln was against slavery that the northerners were trying to work towards banning slavery so they took it as a threat and eventually started the civil war. This event impacted history because if Lincoln wasn't elected the civil war might not have happened. The election took place in the northern United States. -
Southern Secession
The Southern Secession was the secession of South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina to form the Confederate States of America because of the threat to slavery from the Union. The Southern Secession took place in the United States. The Southern Secession impacted history because it created the Union's enemy in the Civil War.
