Scott was a slave in a free territory. His slave owner decided to move into a slave state. His owner ended up dying and Scott had abolitionist attorneys file a law suit for him. He ended up losing because they say he is not a person, but he is property. Northerners hated this while Southerners loved it. They also ruled that Congress couldn't ban slavery in the territories.
