    Invention of the Cotton Gin
    Before the cotton gin, cotton took a long time to make. It took hours to remove seeds from the cotton. Therefore cotton was not as popular. Then Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin which removed seeds from the cotton very quick. The cotton gin made the cotton industry so popular slavery soared up. People in the south needed the slaves to make money off of the cotton.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Missouri territory got enough population and want to be a state. But this was a problem. It would upset the balance of free and slave states. So the Missouri Compromise was made. Massachusetts would be split and its other part would become Maine. So Maine entered as a free state at the same time Missouri entered as a slave state. Another part of the Missouri Compromise was slavery would not be allowed north of the 36° 30′ line.

    Gold was discovered in California so with that news, people flushed into California. With so many people, California applied for stateship. But again was the same problem. If California entered as a free state the balance of states would be upset. So the South and North compromised. California would be a free state if slaves who had escaped to the North would be returned to the South called the Fugitive Slave Law.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin had a big impact on causing the war. In the North, it convinced people that slavery was terrible and shouldn't ever happen. So many people wanted to read this book that, at the time, it was the number 2 most selling book after the Bible. What Uncle Tom's Cabin also did was it kept england out of the war. As soon as they read how bad the slavery was, they wanted no part in it.

    When Lincoln was elected South Carolina was mad about it. They saw it as the North trying to take them over and make slavery illegal. So instead of trying to be in the same country as they North, they decided to form their own country.
