    The Compromise started with the problem of California petitioning to become a states. Both Anti-Slavery and Pro-Slavery didn't want California to become a state because no other territories were close to becoming a state in order for both side to be even in state number. To solve this problem, they allowed California in as a free state, but they also passed the Fugitive Slave Law, which meant everyone in the north had to help Slave Owner get their slave back if they were in the north.

    An act passed that allowed the people to decide wheter Kansas should be a slave state or a free state through Popular Sovereignty, The Policy of letting the people of an area make their own decisions on an issue or issues. The Republican Party was formed because of this. The Republican were opposed to the expansion of Slavery. There were many blood spilled between those who were Pro-Slavery and those who were Anti-Slavery. This event was known as "Bloody Kansas."

    The 1860 Election in which Lincoln was elected. This is one of the cause of the Civil War because the south believed that with a Republican running the country, they were afraid that Lincoln was going to abolish slavery. So a year after Lincoln was elected, in 1861, South Carolina seceded from the union. More southern states followed. He only won with 39.7% of popular vote.
